BUILDING ENGINEERS AND MENTORS (BEAM)

Henry Samueli School of Engineering

Bringing hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) lessons to underserved K-8 schools across Los Angeles.

Services Provided

We provide free after-school STEM lessons at elementary schools where our mentors introduce science and engineering concepts and walk students through hands-on activities.

Who We Serve

We partner with Title I schools in LAUSD, and we are currently working with 4th and 5th grade students at Melrose Elementary School and Crescent Heights Elementary School.

Mission and Goals

BEAM aims to increase student interest and confidence in STEM fields from a young age. We work specifically with Title I schools in an effort to encourage students who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM to continue to pursue it, and impact the future diversity of the field.

Photos

Students learn the fundamentals of how bridges work, exploring different types of bridges (e.g. suspension, beam, truss) and attempt to build their own! Robots (with mBots): Students assemble and program their own robots to compete against each other, learning basic programming skills and a knowledge control systems along the way! Microscopes: Students learn about the science behind microscopes, and examine everyday (and not-so-everyday) objects to see what they really look like up close! Oobleck: Students learn about non-Newtonian fluids by creating and playing with one of the most bizzare materials imaginable! Stomp Rockets: Students learn about aerodynamics and how rockets are constructed, and then build and launch their own! Rollercoasters: Students feel the rush of rollercoasters as they learn about the relationship between potential and kinetic energy, and try to make the largest rollercoaster possible!
