Changemaker Scholars provides scholarship funding for UCLA undergraduates to serve as mentors to youth civic actors in Los Angeles. Scholars intern with the organization Changeist from November to July, and complete an independent study course, Community Engagement & Social Change 195CE, during winter and spring quarters.
Services Provided
Changemaker Scholars serve as team leaders for emerging youth activists. They help their Changeists better understand and analyze the curricular material of the program, and guide them in developing service projects on everything from LGBTQ+ rights to housing justice. They meet with their teams 3 Saturdays per month, from January to July.
Who We Serve
The Changemaker Scholars program is open to UCLA undergraduates in any major. The Scholars work with teams of middle and high schools students from across Los Angeles.
Mission and Goals
Changemaker Scholars are UCLA undergraduates who work with Changeist to mentor youth civic activists to transform themselves and their communities in pursuit of social change, executing their vision for a more just society.
Impact Statement
Annually, 3 to 5 students are selected for the Changemaker Scholars program. Each Scholar spends roughly 180 hours over 8 months mentoring 8-12 youth. The program has existed for seven years, since 2017-18.
